Emerald Cities Collaborative E-Contractor Academy is a FREE
7-week workshop series focused on building the capacity of
small, disadvantaged, and local construction contractors to
successfully do business in climate-critical fields
such as energy efficiency, renewable energy, and building electrification.


Schedule of weekly sessions: 
September 28th, 2023 - Intro to building electrification best practices
October 5th, 2023 - Electrification Retrofits: Codes & Cases-studies
October 12th, 2023 - Public & Government Contracting
October 19th, 2023 - Growing & Managing your business
October 26th, 2023 - High Road Contracting (tour training facility)
November 2nd, 2023 - Estimating & bidding for decarbonization projects
November 9th, 2023 - Academy Graduation & upcoming project opportunities

Participants will receive business support guidance and be connected to project opportunities in the Bay Area. After completion, ECC will award a $1,500 grant to contractors to utilize for their business needs. Participants can receive one-one-one assistance in areas such as:

  • Book-keeping
  • Marketing
  • Estimating
  • Certifications

Priority will be given to firms with the following characteristics:

  • Licensed contractors in Electrical, Plumbing, and HVAC trades
  • Disadvantaged-owned Business Enterprises (prior certification not required):
    • Minority-owned
    • Woman-owned
    • Veteran-owned
  • Business Revenue from $250K – $1M
  • Project Scopes from $100K to $1M
  • Owners seeking to grow their business!

Thomas Burns has over 20 years of experience providing start-ups, micro & small businesses with expert advice and assistance in the areas of government contracting, business planning, marketing and sales support. His background includes providing direct representation to small businesses, writing business plans for 50+ clients, bidding and winning multiple contracts with City, County, State agencies as well as doing business with prime contractors in a variety of industries here in Northern California.

Mr. Burns has personally trained, coached and assisted hundreds of entrepreneurs, professionals and small business owners. He has taught webinars, seminars and conducted workshops focusing on building relationships with Prime Contractors, creating winning business plans and marketing to government agencies. Through his personal experience as a business owner, Thomas brings a unique perspective to the small business community.
